Portrait of Autumn

I miss the healthy
mix of Autumn; the
green, yellow and
golden brown
trees as they
turn at different times.
Their leaves hang,
thick and heavy
in clusters
drying and hardening
into delicate skins
stretched over
skeletal veins.

Also, the crisp
air, how it
shuffles the leaves
in intervals of
wind and silence.
The silence of each
individual leaf,
first in the branches,
then on the ground.
It holds its own
color against
the unrelenting
green of the grass.

The silent fall of
snowflakes,
how they turn the
damp grass into
cool, green velvet.
Last, the final
leaves fall onto
snow, golden
before they freeze.
Like the Sun, nature
bursts into color
before fading
into white.
